On whether AI is sustainable -- “Consider sustainability in terms of energy in and energy out. Ensure you’re creating a better impact than the energy required to get there. One way is to make sure you code in a way that is sustainable and embed these practices across the whole industry to manage and balance energy usage. Using different tech in different ways can have a tremendous impact, helping us all at this crucial tipping point in our race towards net zero.”
On saving energy and resources -- “When AI is used effectively by customers, like ACCIONA, a water treatment company in Spain, it can anticipate equipment behaviour and significantly reduce leaks. This not only saves precious resources, but it also uses less power. If the results seen in this one instance were adopted by the European water sector, it could save €8 billion per year.”
On the outlook for AI and sustainability -- “We need more radical collaboration – working together and using data to create positive impact. I’m very optimistic about the future for AI and sustainability, with a slight bit of caution on the side around the need for governance and security.”
