Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has been actively pursuing digital transformation with AVEVA™ PI System™ as a core part of its strategy. One goal is data-based maintenance of assets. However, traditional approaches relying on static limits or manufacturer specifications proved insufficient for robust asset problem detection. To address this, Mondi implemented advanced condition monitoring at their plant in Frantschach, Austria. The initial focus was on pumps and heat exchangers using sensor data from AVEVA PI System. Advanced analytics for anomaly detection was implemented using the software Visplore. The system analyzes data automatically, providing warnings and alarms to asset managers via AVEVA™ PI Vision™ dashboards. Results have shown benefits such as detecting asset cleaning needs earlier and savings in fresh water. Further benefits include reduced maintenance workload and energy savings. Mondi plans to extend the solution to other assets and to implement similar monitoring solutions in other Mondi plants.
