Abstract:

The operational technology that has run our critical infrastructure for decades was built to be isolated, yet the pressure to modernize, to unlock data, apply AI, and connect the most remote assets, has never been greater. The question is no longer whether to modernize, but how to do it without compromising the security that keeps critical infrastructure safe.

AWS makes the case that the answer is a secure cloud boundary: rebuilding the trusted perimeter in the cloud, enforcing the same network separation pipelines have always relied on, now with the scale and intelligence of AWS. It is the same layered boundary the US Department of Defense trusts for its most sensitive workloads.
The proof is already here. SGN extended its isolated gas control networks to AWS while preserving strict segmentation across 74,000 km of mains. Cadent, Northern Gas Networks, and Energuate, which now runs an entire national grid from the cloud, show the same path. The next chapter belongs to AI and LEO satellite connectivity, bringing intelligence to every mile of the pipeline. That future starts with a secure boundary.
