While searching for a control system replacement project for a US-based ethylene plant, we convinced the customer to purchase a dynamic simulation study of the compressor control systems for all three of the large compressor trains. We developed the model using AVEVA™ Dynamic Simulation, and it included extensive testing to compare the simulated data to the plant operating data to improve the fidelity. We used AVEVA Dynamic Simulation for Triconex Systems to connect the new Triconex controls application to the dynamic model for the control checkout. The completed dynamic simulator was then installed in the customer’s DCS lab to allow testing of the DCS screens and applications and finally to train the operators on the use of the new system. By involving the machinery, process, and controls engineers as well as lead operators in the design and testing phase, the resulting system was refined and optimized for their use.
