Description
PRefChem, consist of Pengerang Refining Company Sdn Bhd and Pengerang Petrochemical Sdn Bhd owns and operates the Refinery and Petrochemical Complex which forms a significant part of the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) in Malaysia’s southern state of Johor. The Refinery Complex has a capacity of 300,000 barrels of crude per day while the Steam Cracker Complex able to crack up to 1.1 million tons per year capacity. The Refinery and Cracker (RC) provide feedstock for the integrated petrochemical (PC) complex, with a nameplate capacity of 3.6 million metric tons per annum (MTPA). Flaring is important and relatively safe to dispose associated gas from integrated refinery and petrochemicals complex. Flaring may happen due to various reason such as excess pressure, faulty equipment, process reliability, plant shutdown etc. Though it is function for safety purpose, ineffective monitoring of flaring will lead to high hydrocarbon & energy loss that eventually reduce the overall plant profitability. Flare monitoring is even crucial for integrated complex with high unit throughput to identify potential minimization strategy to reduce the plant flaring rate. Healthy reliable data is required to pinpoint the flaring source, analyze flare and plan for minimization strategy. Monitoring 6 flare stacks at a time with unreliable transmitter reading can be a challenge. Even when the transmitter gives a healthy reading, it is a daunting task to trace through as large as 25 possible units per flare stack that might sent its inventory to the flare stack. Although each unit has its own flow transmitter to flare, transmitter reliability is also an issue and with multiple flaring sources within the unit coming from various equipment, tracing the source and flaring amount is also a challenge as some of the equipment does not have flowmeter. Through a visualization with the Flare Monitoring Dashboard, tracing the flare source is made easier from flare stack to each unit and to each respective equipment as all the data is placed in a single platform. The dashboard will be utilized by process and operation to monitor the performance of their respective unit ad equipment.
