The blog by Diana Muñoz Miller, Ph.D. introduces the new MSE Corrosion Model developed by OLI Systems, a cutting-edge tool designed to enhance material selection in #CO2 injection environments. This model leverages a thermodynamic model and a first-principles-based electrochemical model to accurately predict #corrosion behaviors of duplex stainless-steel alloys in various acidic conditions. MSE Corrosion Model is pivotal in predicting corrosion rates in environments where water is not the primary solvent, thus ensuring the integrity of assets in CO2 transport and storage. The blog also explores broader aspects of corrosion modeling of corrosion-resistant alloys, emphasizing the challenges posed by impurities such as sulfur and nitrogen oxides in CO2. These impurities can form strong acids, increasing corrosion risks in carbon steel pipelines, crucial in carbon capture and storage (CCS) strategies. The corrosion modeling tool by OLI Systems is essential for selecting materials that can withstand the harsh conditions of CO2 injection, thereby supporting effective #CCS strategies.
