  • Are you concerned about the state of OT cybersecurity in the water utility space? Recently, our very own Kevin White had the opportunity to speak with Sean S. Costigan PhD at Dunwoody College of Technology about this topic. The great news about standardization is that a template already exists, namely following how the power industry has approached OT cybersecurity. Leveraging these similarly focused, already crafted, industry standards, water utilities can identify the risk mitigators necessary to maintain reliable and safe operations. Let's work together to improve communication and strengthen our cybersecurity measures in this vital industry. Contact the EIS Industrial Cybersecurity team with questions. • Are you concerned about the state of OT cybersecurity in the water utility space? Recently, our very own Kevin White had the opportunity to speak with Sean S. Costigan PhD at Dunwoody College of Technology about this topic. OT Cybersecurity is a new and growing field, open to creative thinkers who want to solve problems. While IT cybersecurity has led the way in establishing the pipelines necessary to find subject matter experts, OT needs to create, fill, and train these roles- no small feat. Luckily, since this focus area is still in its infancy, there is a huge opportunity for curious, technical people to step in and lead the way. Aligning to standards is a difficult ask for many facilities, who are already overwhelmed with the day-to-day operations of a water utility. However, these standards allow plants to identify the ideal OT cybersecurity end goal, with a tangible plan on how to accomplish those goals. Unfortunately, without understanding your current status and vulnerabilities, addressing them becomes much more challenging. Operational networks have been built to allow operators and managers to utilize real time SCADA data to both control and monitor system conditions. They usually utilize various devices requiring different communication protocols. Since information and access security were not necessarily primary concerns when building these systems, the vulnerabilities are commonly unrecognized and, therefore, unaddressed. Risk management is a common methodology in IT cybersecurity; while it may be ideal to have all protections in place, implementing it all may not be feasible due to cost, resources, and applicability. To prioritize what must be implemented, risks are ranked accordingly and then solutions applied to the highest risk vulnerabilities. This common methodology also applies to OT cybersecurity, with some obvious adjustments for an operational cybersecurity stance. Let's work together to improve communication and strengthen our cybersecurity measures in this vital industry. Contact the EIS Industrial Cybersecurity team with questions. Are you concerned about the state of OT cybersecurity in the water utility space? Recently, our very own Kevin White had the opportunity to speak with Sean S. Costigan PhD at Dunwoody College of Technology about this topic. With the continued integration of edge devices to better optimize water utility operations, the threat surface area for facilities continues to grow. Realizing these additional data points and their utilization are now business critical pieces of information, water utilities must identify all devices, understand their configuration, and update their software to the most current versions. This is an activity that must be repeatedly evaluated and updated. Let's work together to improve communication and strengthen our cybersecurity measures in this vital industry. Are you concerned about the state of OT cybersecurity in the water utility space? Recently, our very own Kevin White had the opportunity to speak with Sean S. Costigan PhD at Dunwoody College of Technology about this topic. With recent events at water utilities making headlines, a common question is "Why water?" We discussed the complex answer to this question, as well as the reason why water utilities are particularly vulnerable. However, there are solutions, tools, and standards which can be implemented to minimize these industry agnostic vulnerabilities. Let's work together to improve communication and strengthen our cybersecurity measures in this vital industry. Contact the EIS Industrial Cybersecurity team with questions.
