A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical object, process or system. It is a digital replica that simulates the behavior, characteristics and performance of its real-world counterpart in real time. In basic terms, a digital twin will include data, models and analytics in varying proportions plus a visualization experience. A digital twin combines all possible data sets from engineering and operations and enhances it with one or more types of first-principle models and artificial intelligence. Once the data has been aggregated, users throughout the enterprise can visualize the data in a fit-for-purpose format to solve certain use cases. A digital twin can model the design and building of a capital project or the day-to-day operations of an industrial asset or process.
