Viticulture and Enology [V&E] - that is, Grape Growing and Wine Making - has deep roots in human history; it has been practiced in a very artisanal way going back for many generations. It has adapted an inherent focus on the ultimate understanding and capturing that sense of people and place, that is terroir.
To more specifically explore these, the salient V&E Operational Segments will be identified and delineated, with particular emphasis placed on the Vineyard’s seasonal events and the Winery Cellar’s batch characteristics, including sustainability [e.g., water, energy, labor, economics]. Within this ecosystem of production operations, a foundation will be outlined for a historical database of events that will be time-based, contextualized, localized, comprehensive, integrated, and enable action in the form of decisions, changes in workflow, and responses, in real-time world-wide. Ultimately, the intent is to set the stage for the development and implementation of real-time diagnostics [for weather, crops, yields, lots, blends, or bottle aging], soft sensors, advanced analytics [for predictive insights], virtual trials, as well as advanced supervisory process control and to create a Collaboration Platform for improved decision making, optimization and profitability.
