Refrigeration is a critical process for ensuring the efficient operation of any industry. At Hydro's bauxite mine in Paragominas [MPSA], we manage two types of environments that are essential to the business: the refrigeration of power substations, whose failure can compromise the entire control and automation of the plant, and the preservation of food supplied to the company's employees. MPSA faces the challenge of maintaining safely controlled temperatures in critical environments, in compliance with standards and legislation. To this end, temperature and humidity sensors were installed in strategic locations, such as electrical rooms [substations] and cold storage chambers, ensuring greater operational safety and minimizing human error in controls. The strategic management of the extensive volume of data generated by these sensors was made possible by the AVEVA platform, integrated with the company's Asset Intelligence Center. Now is possible to implement strategies based on reliable information, allowing proactive interventions before major problems, such as failures in refrigeration systems, impacted operations. AVEVA's system provides personalized alerts, meeting the needs of both strategic engineering and operational teams in their daily activities. In addition, the reliability of the data opened up new opportunities to reduce energy consumption in refrigeration systems, which are known to be largely responsible for global energy consumption. With continuous monitoring and real-time data, we were able to identify peak temperature times, adjusting the equipment to operate only when necessary. This model, inspired by the "Just in Time" concept, allows refrigeration to be performed in an optimized manner, aligned with the real demand of critical environments, which was previously impossible due to the lack of visibility into the periods of greatest need. AVEVA platform was fundamental to the innovation and improvement of refrigeration processes, increasing the reliability and excellence of operations. It has enabled the formulation of short, medium and long-term asset and energy management strategies, aligned with MPSA's sustainability and operational efficiency.
