O&G Energy Transition
Description

Protium is the UK’s leading green hydrogen energy company, providing comprehensive net zero energy solutions for clients committed to achieving sustainability. Protium leads this transition across multiple sectors, including heat, transport, and power by designing, developing, financing, owning, and operating green hydrogen and renewable energy infrastructure assets. One of Protium’s latest projects is Pioneer 2, which is expected to come online in Q4 2024. This facility employs a 2.5 MW containerised PEM electrolyser capable of producing approximately one tonne of green hydrogen per day which will be used to service transport and stationary power applications. The project will also support other work, supplying the hydrogen for HGV applications and the first UK aviation trails.

To achieve success, Protium is technology-agnostic, leveraging digital technology to reduce hydrogen costs. Both proprietary and licensed software is used, including an Energy System Model for early estimation of energy requirements and optimisation of project design, as well as AVEVA Process Simulation for digital twin creation, supporting all process optimisation, live performance monitoring, forecasting and scenario definition, and economic analysis. It also supports data validation with contractors, allowing Protium to sense-check vendor figures, reduce outsourcing requirements, and ensure the lowest hydrogen costs are achieved. Implementing these digital tools not only increases the expertise at Protium, but also enables projects to be modelled in greater detail at a much faster pace, improving overall productivity, raising the company’s profile.

The operation of the digital tools is streamlined through AVEVA PI, connecting multiple applications to enable the creation of the live digital twin. This data-driven approach, enhanced by AI and machine learning, supports predictive maintenance models which minimise downtime and foster innovation in green hydrogen technology. AVEVAs PI Vision also provides a centralised dashboard for tracking important KPIs, including power efficiency, equipment degradation, and hydrogen production trends, for example.

IoT is also employed for real-time updates and analytics on a hydrogen transport fleet, optimizing operations further. Advanced scheduling and planning software are integral as the operations scale up, with AVEVA’s unified software suite supporting cross-integration and operational complexity.

Protium also stays ahead of technological advancements by sponsoring PhD research in predictive maintenance, maintaining uptime and a superior customer experience. This holistic, data-driven approach positions Protium at the forefront of the green hydrogen industry, driving sustainability and innovation.

In this session, Protium will showcase its transformative approach to green hydrogen production through the strategic integration of digital technologies. As the UK's leading green hydrogen energy company, Protium has adopted a comprehensive digital strategy, employing both proprietary tools and AVEVA’s advanced software solutions to enhance every project stage. Attendees will learn about Protium's use of the Energy System Model for project optimization, AVEVA Process Simulation for design validation, and AVEVA PI for creating live digital twins that streamline operations. The session will highlight how these technologies collectively reduce costs, improve efficiency, and support sustainable energy solutions.
